Driving in the United Kingdom

We have ongoing work for experienced drivers in the United Kingdom. We are happy to accept candidates from Europe that have a right to work in the United Kingdom. We understand that this can be difficult if drivers have not worked in the UK before. We have put together this paper as guidance but you should complete your own research.

WORKING AND DRIVING IN THE UK

National Insurance (NI)

In order to be paid, you will need a UK NI number or be able to prove that you have applied for it. To get a UK NI number, you have to be in the UK and you will need an appointment with a local Job Centre to obtain this. The phone number to obtain this is 0845 600 0643 but we will make this appointment for you. Once we have made the appointment, you will be given a reference number that allows you to be paid. You need to apply for this as soon as you arrive in the UK as it can take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive. You will only be able to be paid for a short while against the reference number.

Driver licence / digital tachograph card (digicard)

Legally, you can drive on European licences for up to 1 year. In practice, most employers prefer you to transfer your licence to a UK licence. It costs £50 to transfer a licence and details are available at https://www.gov.uk/non-gb-driving-licence.

Similarly, most employers prefer to see a UK digicard. For details of how to apply, see https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-a-digital- ... smart-card.

Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)

In the UK, you have to have completed 35 hours of CPC training by September 2014. If you have completed 35 hours in an EU country, you will have a code showing 95 on the back of your UK licence when it is transferred. If you do not have this and you have completed 35 hours, you will need to contact DVLA.

Once you have completed 35 hours of training, you will receive a Driver Card. Details of the CPC rules for non-UK licence holders are at https://www.gov.uk/driver-certificate-o ... ce-holders.

Working for Driver Hire

Our employees are now paid through our umbrella company. There are many benefits for you:

· As an employee of Driver Hire Umbrella you are working for a regulated, legal, UK registered umbrella company.

· On a contract of employment as opposed to contract of services, giving you all statutory employment rights (e.g. Paternity/maternity cover)

· Regular payments every Friday with a text alert once payroll has been run.

· Holiday pay paid out on a weekly basis and included in your take home pay.

· Personal accident cover included, paying up to a maximum of £400 a week for up to 52 weeks.

· Up to £50k paid out for permanent disability or accidental death in service.

· Ability to join a pension from January 2014 after completing 12 weeks service.

· The umbrella scheme aims to maximise Net Pay. The PAYE rate is uplifted and this should result in a higher ‘take home’ Net Pay even allowing for deductions made by Driver Hire Umbrella.

· If your umbrella pay rate is over £8.11 p.hr, you are able to claim expenses. These are then offset against taxable pay to reduce the amount of tax paid. Please note it is a tax reduction, not expenses paid back in full. The amount of expenses available to you varies according to the pay-rate and hours worked. If you submit a claim for expenses greater in value than the amount which is available the surplus will be rolled over on to the following week;s payslip.

· Driver Hire Umbrella deduct a margin of 8% of gross pay each week (up to a max of £26p.wk). This is reduced to £10p.wk if the umbrella pay rate is less than £8.11 p.hr.

Any questions please do not hesitate to call DHU on 03301008685 (please not this is not a premium rate number and is the same as any 01 or 02 number)

There are a number of rooms to rent on a weekly basis. They are available through websites and through agencies such as:

Nuneaton: Twój Sklep, 296 Queens Road, Nuneaton CV11 5LY, 07849 470892

Language / knowledge

You will need to have good English (written and spoken) together with a good knowledge of UK driving laws as set out in the Highway Code (available at https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/highway-code) as well as Drivers Hours and the Road Transport (Working Time) Directive. Many companies test you briefly on your knowledge of these when you arrive on the first day. If companies ask you to complete a driving assessment, it is very important to drive at the speed limits for that road. Also during the registration process at our office you will be required to show your knowledge of the above through a small test.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

In the UK you must have proper safety boots (lace ups) that have full steel protection and must cover your ankles when driving a lorry. Some of our clients require you to wear other PPE in order to carry out work for them; this will be provided once we put you out to work with that client.

Day shifts normally start at 06:00 but can change to suit the client and any scheduled deliveries.
