VIP MANV10 Posted April 16, 2010 VIP Share Posted April 16, 2010 It's regarded as the barometer of product quality: the 1000 points test. For four days motoring journalists from three countries judged the contestants - four tractors of the 480 hp class with large-sized cabs - in the latest test. The results of the comparison will appear in 20 European magazines. MAN fielded the TGX 18.480 with an XXL cab. The TGX scored especially well when it came to transport efficiency. It rated top for consumption, cost/value, power train and driving performance. The fact that MAN vehicles are the most efficient solution on the bottom line for keen calculators was also proven by the test: at 73.4 cents per kilometer the TGX gives the lowest overall operating costs. In the final result the TGX 18.480 shares second place with the Mercedes Actros 1848, both with the same number of points, behind the Scania R480. In the on-road test the TGX demonstrated the right combination of engine power, gear change strategy and rear axle ratio. The power train of the TGX, said the testers of "Fernfahrer", matched better than any other the driving challenges of the route on the A1 and A62 motorways round the city of Trier. The English Magazine "Commercial Motor" appreciated the way the TGX steams uphill with an ideal 1,150 revs, its TipMatic gearbox selecting the right gear from the outset. An exactly matched power train design is the basis for low test consumption. "But the best consumption and the accomplished power train construction aren't the only highlights of the MAN TGX", summarized the magazine "lastauto omnibus". The driver workplace also received recognition. The TGX offered the best air-conditioning, excellent bunks and a well styled workplace, reckoned the testers of "lastauto omnibus". 715 liters of stowage space with large front compartments, generously sized outside compartments and shelving within easy reach of the driver's seat contributed to the good assessment. The TGX is also the lightest semitrailer tractor of the four tested, giving it a 390 kg lead in payload over its competitors. The full test is published in the magazines "lastauto omnibus" issue 3/2010 and "Fernfahrer" issue Heft 3/2010, and in “Commercial Motor”, issue 12/2009.
